Plumelec, in the heart of the Lanvaux moorlands, is famous for the Côte de Cadoudal, a starting or finishing point for many cycle races, including the Tour de France. And soon it might be just as famous for the tasty 'galettes' (buckwheat pancakes) made by Olivier Guillou, a native of this bucolic corner of Morbihan.
Since 1999 he’s been delighting the 2,800 inhabitants of this village, tucked away in the countryside, 25km from Vannes. You can’t miss his traditional Breton farmhouse, with its three-metre-tall 'korrigan' or Breton leprechaun decorating the gable. Inside, there is a collection of over 80 figurines of korrigans that are a hit with younger visitors. The atmosphere around the open fireplace is family-friendly and you’ll be totally won over by his delicious blends of ingredients, highlighting local producers, ranging from the flour produced by his neighbour the miller, to the butcher who set up shop in Plumelec at the same time he set up the restaurant. You're sure to enjoy the Chou-Pomme (cabbage, sausage, apples cooked in home-made cider), the Dodo (pears in syrup, goat's cheese, smoked filet mignon, buckwheat honey, walnuts) or, in winter, the Végétarienne (carrots, turnips, cabbage, spinach, leeks – all organic of course and cooked in butter).
