Really get away from it all. In the magical Parc de Brière, France’s second largest marshland, you can escape from everything in the labyrinth of peat and canals. The Préfailles nature reserve will take you down to the sea. Land and water sketch the outline of the Redon marshes and the Ile aux Pies, blanketed with yellow iris. Birds inhabit the Marais Breton marshland and the Dunes du Collet in Moutiers. On the Loire, the Massereau reserve is home to teals in winter. The exceptional flora and fauna can be discovered on an organised nature excursion.

From works of art, to chic elegance and charming heritage

The ramparts in Guérande, a Town of Art and History, are guaranteed to capture your heart and imagination. The towns of Batz, Piriac, Le Croisic and La Roche-Bernard are picture-perfect in granite and slate. Traditional fishing and sailing boats line their harbours. In Brière, the thatched cottages in the village of Kerhinet make a charming backdrop to an evening stroll. The villas in the seaside resorts of La Baule, Pornic and Préfailles add a distinct elegance to the coastline. Redon Abbey and the Saint-Gildas-des-Bois abbey church add a touch of serenity.

River banks and woodland, just a bit different

The works of art on display in the Estuaire open-air exhibition are a pleasant surprise. The poetic Jardin Etoilé blooms along the banks of the Loire. Further downstream a giant Sea Snake lurks in the water. Inland, at Planète Sauvage, you can roam amongst monkeys and elephants in the comfort of your car. On the banks of the river Vilaine, the artistic belvederes in Rieux and Fégréac and the sailboats among the marshes in Port de Foleux will grab your attention. In Redon, the astonishing Vélonautic will have you pedalling on water!

Festivals of all kind, all year round

Take your pick! For music options you’re spoilt for choice - Couvrefeu in Corsept, La Baule Jazz Festival, Les Escales or the Aubes Electroniques festival in Saint-Nazaire. For something uniquely Breton, try the Bogue d’Or festival in Redon, Celtiques de Guérande or the Saint Gilles festival in Pornic. The Saint-Brévin Pyrotechnic festival will leave you awe-struck. For something a bit more relaxed, Jumping International de La Baule (show jumping event) is sure to be a winner.

For an action-packed, big day out start by crossing the elegant Saint-Nazaire bridge. Suspended 62 metres above the Loire, the bridge offers a spectacular view of the estuary, industrial sites, the port and the open sea. Back on firm ground, visit the shipyards, everything here is enormous! The liners are still assembled under the same gigantic cranes that were used to build the SS France and SS Normandie. Next, head for the submarine base and Escal’Atlantic to relive a crossing on board a legendary vessel. Bon voyage!

Experience the local area with the local people!

It’s a real privilege to be welcomed by people who are passionate about their local area! A local fisherman will take you for a dawn trip along the river Vilaine. Nearby, on the île aux Pies, a storyteller adds a little extra magic to your visit. On the coast, oyster and mussel farmers andpaludiers(salt harvesters) share the secrets of their trade. You can also meet the people of Pornic at the fishing port, casino, fishery or in the workshops of the carnival team, where the floats for Pornic’s grand carnival are made. Or take to the seas on a guided trip to fish for sea bass and skipjack tuna.

Discover the ‘white gold’ of the salt marshes

On the Guérande peninsula, 2,500 hectares of salt marshes form a glittering mosaic. In the soft evening light, the pools turn incredible colours. It’s a light show not to be missed! On a guided walk you can learn about salt harvesting from thepaludiers(salt workers) themselves – though you might need to take some of their stories with a pinch of salt. Further south, enthusiasts are breathing new life into abandoned salt works that once supplied all of Europe. In Bourgneuf bay,fleur de selis blooming again in its natural habitat.

On bike or by boat, take the time to escape

Surfaced trails and the services ofAccueil Vélomean that everyone can enjoy cycling here. Circular trails and waymarked routes wind their way between land and sea. The greenway ‘Voie verte 2’ runs along the banks of the Vilaine river. The Velodyssey® and Vélocéan take riders past ports and beaches. Peaceful kilometres stretch out along the Nantes-Brest canal and the Loire by Bike routes. Fancy exploring on the water? Boats and kayaks navigate the canal and the rivers Oust and Vilaine. Cruise boats run along the Loire. For coastal sailing, services run from the marinas.
