Rocky cliffs battered by the spindrift, white shingle banks and ginger heath, sea sparkling with foam and rocky escarpments, these are the romantic landscapes appreciated by nature lovers who come to Ouessant to tackle the elements. Extraordinary fauna can be observed by amateurs and scientists. If the colony of grey seals plays hide-and-seek in order to preserve its peacefulness, certain migrating birds are quite easy to observe. The Ornithological Center of Ouessant proposes discovery journeys all through the year.
Ouessant, the guardian of the Iroise Sea
Harsh and tough, Ouessant the sentry is also the sailors' light. An impressive number of ships cross the famous rail off the island, kept watch on by a whole fleet of lighthouses. The Creac'h, that guides the ships into the English Channel, is one of the most powerful in the world.
Ouessant, face to face with the elements
Like a rocky star floating on the ocean, Ouessant stretches out to the four winds. As it is the most western part of Brittany, it is frequently visited by the Kornog (westerly wind), the Mervent (south-wester) or the Gwalarn (north-wester), rarely by southerly winds. Febuary is the month with the biggest storms, and whenever Aeolus is really angry, the whole of Ouessant knows. Besides, the history of shipwrecks and rescue operations is part of the island's memory.
Ouessant, on the side of the land
Ouessant also greatly bends its concerns towards the land, and for a long time, the women cultivated a large part of the island. Waiting for the sailor's pay, it was them who had to keep the pot boiling. Another distinctive feature: at least a thousand sheep gamboling free on the island during the so-called period of “common grazing land”. They find shelter against the wind behind small star-shaped constructions made of stone. The host of small mills that once peppered the island has now disappeared.
