Sein

Sein, legendary island, rough and proud, is the emerging part of a long rocky reef, sprinkled with spikes, that forms the formidable “Chaussée de Sein”, the Sein roadway. Several times threatened by the water because of its low height above sea level, Sein has always resisted alone against the raging elements. If it was a sailor's and generations of fishermen's island up to the XXth century, it now partly lives on tourism. The white lighthouse and Ar Men, the last one before the New World, guide the ships along this maritime route, where reefs and violent currents once caused so many shipwrecks.

Sein, the authentic
Sein is as serene as it is extreme. “Who meets Sein, meets his end” is a sailors' saying that was inspired by the unfavorable environment of the island, partly responsible for its retained authenticity. This strip of land, no more than 2 km long and hardly 800 meters wide, will suit all lovers of nature, calm and overwhelming landscapes. Between earth and sea, the sea thrift persist in sprinkling the island with fiery posies, whose pink color cheers up the isle with every ray of sunlight, and the grey shingles roll together in the rhythm of the undertow.  Only broken by the lashing waves and the fog horn from time to time, the quietness is perfect.  The colony of bottlenose dolphins, who frolic about around the island's coasts all through the year, don't seem to dislike it.

Sein, the heroic
There is only one village on the island of Sein, where pretty houses with green, blue or pink shutters cuddle up alongside the narrow alleys. People of Sein stand together against the drizzle. Since General De Gaulle's call-up in June 1940, the Sénans are renowned for their courage and solidarity. The island's sailors, even though they had been forgotten in the general call-up, took to the sea in a body and joined the British coasts. When the General counted 150 inhabitants of Sein amongst the 600 volunteers of Free France, he is supposed to have said: “So the island of Sein is a quarter of France!”
