The sea, continuously moving, is not always thrown back by cliffs or ending up on a beach. In Brittany, the sea often meets inner shores, using the numerous indentations that marble the coastline. The tides make the breton rivers grow and marine influences are carried far into the land. Whether you call them rias (galician origin), abers (breton origin) or even estuary, these spots where salt and fresh water meet, are one of the main characteristics of breton rivers.
Between land and sea
The further you go from the coast into the land , the more the borders between what's sea and what's land are disappearing. Blue and green naturally go hand in hand in these enchanting sceneries, that are also great ecological sites due to their remarkable diversity. As it is, the estuaries host nurseries for many species of fish, and the tidal mud flats give shelter to the birds.
Rivers of character
In Morbihan, the Blavet river draws meanders in its own surprising way, and the isle village of Saint Cado seems to float on the river Etel like a tiny confetti. The deep, beautiful valley of Léguer offers many possibilities for hiking and trekking in woody landscapes. In Finistère, the Aber wrac'h and Aber benoît are two examples of this particular breton phenomena. In Ille- et- Vilaine, following the Rance (famous for its tidal power station) is a surefire way to discover the charming and unique beauty of this setting that lies between the seaside resorts of the Emerald coast and the medieval city of Dinan.
