Deep in farming and football territory, Guingamp is the charming sub-prefectural town of the Côtes-d’Armor. It's a fine town of human size, with an interesting architectural heritage.
Built more than1,000 years ago in the attractive valley of the Trieux river, Guingamp is the former capital of the wealthy and powerful Duchy of Penthièvre. From its rich and sometimes turbulent past it has preserved an architectural and urban heritage that is both fascinating and illuminating. The architecture of this castle town displays many different facets, including 16th century wood panelled houses, 17th century monasteries, a motte-and-bailey and castle dating back to the 15th century and a basilica, along with 20th century architecture typical of this region. Guingamp is a true bastion of Breton identity, and this is reaffirmed every year in August, when it hosts the Saint-Loup Festival of Breton dance. This is also football territory, and the residents are loyal supporters of their famous team, the 'En Avant de Guingamp'.
