Since 2008, the contemporary art biennale Les Ateliers de Rennes has attempted to build a creative bridge between the world of work and the work of the artist. From September through to December, across several venues in the city, the works created for the Ateliers give you plenty to think about.

“Due to general indifference, tomorrow has been cancelled,” was the famous slogan from the uprisings of May 1968, revisited in 2008 by the artistic duo Chapuis & Touyard during the 1st edition of Les Ateliers de Rennes. Yet every two years this festival proves that the best of contemporary art is yet to come. With its experience at the very heart of local businesses, Les Ateliers de Rennes is the only event of its kind in Europe, whose mission is to question the relationship between art and the economy. Whether they are looking to reveal examples of malfunction, draw on its dynamics or investigate other kinds of correlation between work and art, artists cannot ignore the economic reality that surrounds their artistic activity. With fifty or so works on show, from digital minimalism to giant open-air sculpture, the artists contributing to this biennale are certainly not afraid of a bit of hard work!
