Cartopole presents the history of the postcard, with its amazing collection of old cards, whilst at the same time giving you a glimpse of the traditional Breton way of life.
The Cartopole, in the canton of Baud, is the public showcase for the Conservatoire Régionale de la Carte Postale (Regional Collection of Picture Postcards) which has around 50,000 cards (mostly dating from before 1920). Through some 2000 cards (regularly renewed) and a cross-fading slide show, you can re-live the life of a Breton village at the beginning of the 20th century: agriculture, traditions, crafts, the sea, local festivals, family life, local personalities, transport, etc. Fun and fascinating, Cartopole teaches you much more about the card itself - the back of the card is often just as interesting as the obvious picture, as well as about the illustrators (Mathurin Méheut, Georges Géo-Fourrier, etc.). And don’t miss this year’s special exhibition “Farming and the life of local people in Brittany at the beginning of the 20th century.”
