The Cap d’Erquy and Cap Fréhel headlands

Pink sandstone cliffs and unspoilt beaches, pine forests, an emerald sea and character villages: escape to the Cap d’Erquy and Cap Fréhel headlands!

A treat for all the senses

Impressive and colourful landscapes, the scent of the moorlands, crashing waves and the call of seabirds: open your eyes, nostrils and ears! Looming above an emerald sea, the pink sandstone cliffs of the Cap d’Erquy headland are crowned by wild moorlands where the colours are ever-changing. The dazzling yellow of gorse flowers in spring is followed by violet heathers in summer. This nature reserve is home to a variety of plant species and is a haven for seabirds. Erquy is also a fishing-port, known for its scallops. Not far away, the majestic cliffs of Cap Fréhel provide one of the best views in Brittany. On a clear day, you can enjoy a panoramic view that stretches from the Cotentin Peninsula and Jersey all the way to Paimpol: it’s mind-blowing!

Some of the finest beaches on the north coast

Follow the GR 34 coast path between the Cap d’Erquy and Cap Fréhel headlands to discover a succession of beaches and coves that are some of the finest on the north coast. It will be hard to resist a swim in the translucent water. Once you reach Cap Fréhel, continue your walk towards Fort La Latte, a medieval fortress built on the clifftop. Although cycling is not allowed on the GR footpath, cyclists can use the Tour de Manche route at the Cap d’Erquy, which has been developed as a green cycle route. Continue as far as the Sables-d’Or marshes and you can follow the submersible road at low tide, crossing a nature reserve punctuated by a series of remarkable structures. Enjoy the countryside: Plédéliac forest, the Château de la Hunaudaye, the pretty historic towns of Lamballe and Jugon-les-Lacs. As for the valley of the River Rance, it’s a perfect place for walking and horse riding. Don’t miss the medieval town of Dinan on the banks of this coastal river.
