  • A listed Petite Cité de Caractère (small town of character) since 1978, Bécherel has been known for the past 20 years as the principal ‘place of books’ in France.

Since 1978, Bécherel, between Rennes and Saint-Malo, has been a listed Small town of Character, thanks to its vast architectural heritage that has been successfully preserved. The names of its squares and streets remind you of the knights, butter-churners, hemp-workers and so on who used to work there (Cours des Chevaliers, Rue de la Beurrerie, de la Filanderie, de la Chanvrerie etc.): from the 16th to 18th century, the linen and hemp trade prospered, far beyond the boundaries of the kingdom. For the last 20 years Bécherel has been the number one ‘book city’ in France and the third in Europe. Former mansions and weaver’s stores are now the haunts of librarians, second-hand booksellers, creators and craftsmen (sculptor, painter, photographer, bookbinder, calligrapher, and illustrator), open all year round. A gold mine for lovers and collectors of art and books…
