  • At Pleurtuit, not far from Dinard and Saint-Malo, Montmarin Gardens overlook the Rance estuary, and open out onto a lake that is more than a kilometre wide.

These gardens open onto a magnificent lake and drop down, in a succession of terraces, to the river Rance. People love the typically French style garden whose design has remained unchanged since the 18th century (terraces, box hedges, hornbeam, lime-tree avenues), and the ‘romantic garden’ with lawns, copses, rockeries, flower-beds and botanical collections that just become more beautiful from year to year…Built in 1760, Montmarin was originally a “malouinère” (house belonging to ship-owners from St-Malo). During the French Revolution, it became a port and naval yard, employing1200 dockers. Then, from 1840 on, it became a pleasure garden. Virtually destroyed by the storms of 1987, and greatly damaged by that of 1999, the six hectares of gardens at Montmarin are today, beautifully restored.
