Maison du costume breton

Maison du Costume

Costumes and traditions
Museum, Folk art and traditions at Sérent

  • This museum of Breton costumes invites you on a journey into the history of a familiar and iconic tradition, from lower Brittany to the Gallo region.

The Maison du Costume Breton is set up in one of the oldest houses in the town of Serent. It is the ideal setting for a magnificent collection of Breton costumes, shown off on about 100 models. Discover the different traditions of the five departments of historical Brittany (including Loire-Atlantique), which describe 200 years of history, and the richness of this special but familiar heritage. From the linen shirt to the ceremonial dress for men, from the minutely detailed feminine embroideries to the starched bonnets, the variety of colours, designs and materials are amazing. The museum also features the “coiffes” (bonnets) – which are symbols of identity and belonging. You will also find priests’ clothing and old photos.
