  • There simply had to be a museum dedicated to that great symbol of Breton culture, the coiffe, or headdress. , The Bigouden museum in Pont-l’Abbé looks at this and many other aspects of traditional life and customs in Brittany.

It might just be the best kept secret in Brittany: how does this famous headdress, that stands proud as a menhir, stay up? You'll find the answer at the Château de Pont-l’Abbé, now home to the Bigouden museum. With numerous photos and videos, the museum shows us the history of this unusual headdress and the people that wore it. Presented in a contemporary scenographic style, the museum's collections tell the story of days gone by, of a society that still projects a strong cultural identity today. Ceramic bowls and plates, intricately embroidered clothes, musical instruments, finely worked furniture, maritime and agricultural tools, etc. From box-beds to formica, the museum goes back in time to tell the story of changes in Brittany's traditiona and homes. Collected by families in the Pays Bigouden area over the last 60 or so years, these everyday and more unusual objects bear witness to a way of life that was unique to Brittany, now overtaken by modernity.
