  • A magnificent example of the new generation of French golf clubs, St Malo Hotel, Golf and Country Club is a cracker. With a decidedly upmarket feel, it offers far more than simply superb parkland golf as there is a delightful on-site hotel with all the associated comforts.

On the edge of the Mesnil forest and bordering the lovely Lake Mirloup, the principal 18-hole course covers 250 acres and is thought to be the largest in Brittany. It starts and finishes with a par five and certainly feels spacious with more than enough room to open your shoulders and let rip. Designed by Hubert Chesneau, the architect of the famous Golf National near Paris, the 6700-yard course has the feel of an old established estate with a majestic lake adding an extra touch of class. There’s also an appealing, nine-hole, par 36 course.
