  • In the heart of Brocéliande forest, the forges of Paimpont remind us of an industrial past that disappeared long ago and was almost forgotten, but has now been painstakingly restored. You'll find it on the Route du Fer (the Iron route), by the water's edge in the forest.

There's a well-known song by the Breton band Tri Yann, with the lyrics "Ding, ding dong, dong, these are the girls from the forges…". The forges in question, as the song tells us, are the forges of Paimpont. There are no girls there now. The bellows fell into disuse at the end of the 19th century, after 200 years of intense metalworking activity which was made possible by a plentiful supply of iron ore and charcoal. But the place has retained the spirit of the pre-industrial age, which has something poetic, almost pastoral about it. As you walk near the lake you'll pass the foundry, the blast furnaces and the workmen's cottages. The rolling mill, with the rail track for the trolleys, is a superb example of a successful restoration project. There's an exhibition, a discovery trail and a commentated tour to help you make the most of your visit.
