From 12 February to 7 June 2026, discover the committed work of Kwame Brathwaite, who redefines black beauty through his lens.
"Black is beautiful". A slogan that has become a manifesto. But behind these words lies a vision: that of Kwame Brathwaite. Born in Brooklyn and raised in the Bronx, this Afro-American photographer began shaping a free, proud and radical aesthetic in the 1960s. He celebrated a black beauty liberated from the dominant norms: natural hair, handmade clothes, bodies that asserted themselves. His images capture a scene in full effervescence, between fashion, music and political struggles. Jazz, soul, funk, gospel... Brathwaite also photographs Abbey Lincoln, Max Roach, Stevie Wonder and The Stylistics, imposing a new visual language. The first retrospective in Europe, this exhibition pays tribute to a pioneering, vibrant and resolutely committed body of work.
