From 5 April to 6 November 2026, the Port-Musée de Douarnenez celebrates Michel Thersiquel, the great Breton photographer who captured the intimacy of the Ponant islands with poetry and realism.
The À terre en mer exhibition features 65 black-and-white photographs by Michel Thersiquel, taken between 1978 and 1985. Considered to be one of the greatest Breton photographers of his generation, his vision of Batz, Belle-Île, Sein, Groix and Ouessant is both poetic and deeply realistic. Far from the expected images, he captures the intimacy of the Ponant islands: the inhabitants, their trades, their gestures, their environment. Island life, in all its simplicity, seriousness and sometimes humour. These rare, often unpublished images tell the story of what the hurried traveller fails to see: a different rhythm, a questioning of the future and, above all, the joy of being together.
