In Guémené-sur-Scorff, the Bains de la Reine (The Queen’s Baths) turn an unexpected page of the French history dedicated to body care and hygiene.

The Middle-Age era is often portrayed as a filthy period of our history but the reality is more nuanced. This is what demonstrates the existence of this medieval “steam room” built in 1380 by the Rohans; one of the oldest noble families in Brittany. Privately used, mainly by Jeanne de Navarre, this facility presents all the characteristics of the sauna and hammam (Turkish bath) of today. Surprising! Only three steam rooms of this nature remain in France to this day. An identical replica of les Bains de la Reine sits majestically in the square of the castle surrounded by an informative audiovisual exhibition dedicated to hygiene, cosmetics and feminine beauty in the Middle Ages. Free to access, the heritage centre offers guided tours as well as family tours with children’s interaction. It also features as a must-visit destination on a range of cultural and gourmet tours of the medieval city as Guémené-sur-Scorff is the capital of the “andouille” (a traditional coarse-grained sausage made with pork intestines).
