Discover the ironworks village of Les Salles as it was in the 19th century, from the blast furnace to the school, via the master's house and stables...
Straddling 2 départements, Côtes d'Armor and Morbihan, the Forges des Salles ironworks village is the finest example of the industrial heritage of daily life around a blast furnace in the 18th and 19th centuries. Located in the Quénécan forest, this site, which was once home to one of Brittany's largest wood-burning forges, is also the oldest and best-preserved of the Breton ironworks villages: it is over 400 years old! Since 1990, this exceptionally well-preserved former ironworks village has been open to visitors, either on their own or with a guide. Nothing has changed here since operations ceased in 1877. Immerse yourself in the heart of the industrial facilities (coal storage halls, the 12 m high blast furnace used to make cast iron), the ironmaster's house, the workers' and foremen's lodgings, discover the canteen, the grocery shop, the school (mixed!), the stables, the chapel, the terraced gardens...
