In Brest Castle, one of the last vestiges of the old city, the Musée de la Marine recounts centuries of maritime history and offers a fine view of the harbour.
In the recently renovated Brest Castle, the Musée National de la Marine (National Marine Museum) recounts 17 centuries of history about the Brest dockyard and ocean-going fleets, from the time of Primauguet (captain Hervé de Portzmoguer) and Richelieu to the present day. The museum leaves you in no doubt about the ancient and close ties between Brest town and this maritime history. As you walk through the displays in the castle, the historical centre of Brest and one of the rare vestiges of its past, you'll see a spectacular collection of model ships, paintings, sculptures, a pocket submarine, descriptions of old Brest, and souvenirs of the labour camp… all linked with the grand maritime adventure. Discover this exceptional site on your own or with a guide and enjoy the breathtaking view of the harbour, the river Penfeld and the town.
