There's more than one good reason to visit Fougères, in Ille-et-Vilaine: its old town, its castle, and this very gourmet Maison du Sarrasin!
Need we introduce Bertrand Larcher? From Saint-Malo to Tokyo by way of Paris, the founder of 'Breizh Café' shares his vision of Breton terroir, which is both respectful of tradition and avant-garde. In Fougères, not far from the family farm, he has taken over the walls of a building next to the famous château to set up the Maison du Sarrasin. With its fireplaces, beams, old staircase, two terraces and glass roof overlooking the château's garden, the place has a real charm about it! On the menu are some remarkable galettes and crêpes: it has to be said that the house does not compromise on the quality of its raw materials, from the selection of its flours to the smallest of its toppings, right down to the ice creams made with milk from Froment du Léon cows! There's also a delicatessen section, featuring a host of buckwheat-based products, crisps, biscuits, beers and more. For cyclists on the move, note that the house has been awarded the "Accueil Vélo" label.
