At the very southernmost point of the Crozon peninsula, the Maison des Minéraux discovery centre reveals all there is to know about the geology of the Armorican mountains. A golden nugget for avid fans of thousand-year-old rocks.
The former village school at Cap de la Chèvre hides a unique treasure, the largest collection of fluorescent minerals in Europe. This colourful exhibition is one of three permanently on show at this lively museum, dedicated to the discovery of local geology and the minerals of the Armorican mountains. From sandstone to slate, the basement collection of the Maison des Minéraux deserves respect for its age alone: 140 million years old, no less! And the subject is not in the least boring! Because the Maison des Minéraux has made field trips its speciality. With titles like 'sound', 'story-telling', 'this 'n' that' and 'nature', these walks let visitors relate to minerals with their senses, photography and DIY skills, to help them understand not just life sciences but also the planet's ecosystem, in an informal, experimental and fun way.
