Description

From 4 April 2026 to 2 January 2027, the Mathurin-Méheut Museum in Lamballe is bringing together works by Henri Rivière and Mathurin Méheut in a unique exhibition dedicated to their shared fascination with Japan.
Through prints, drawings, travel journals and rare works, the exhibition explores the artistic links forged between Brittany and the Land of the Rising Sun. Although they never met, Henri Rivière and Mathurin Méheut shared a common vision, inspired by Japanese aesthetics. The former imagined an idealised Japan, whilst the latter returned from his stay there with sketches and inspiration. From this artistic encounter emerged a remarkable dialogue in which Breton harbours, sailors and landscapes take on the character of Japanese prints. An invitation to travel, amidst dreams, light and a change of scenery.
