The Daoulas gardens, next door to the abbey, overlook the sea and are a true treat for plant lovers.
There’s no doubt that visitors come to Daoulas to admire the ruins of the Romanesque abbey with its pulpit and fountain, but people also enjoy coming here to wander around the botanical gardens filled with medicinal plants. Inspired by traditions of the Middle Ages, the split-level garden is home to 250 different varieties of herbs, therapeutic, aromatic and exotic plants. It's a great place for a bit of biology revision with the children. In addition to the gardens, the site has 5 hectares of grounds to enjoy, featuring a lake, an old wash house, a sheepfold and even sheep from the isle of Ouessant. Should the weather be inclement, you can always head to the cultural centre to visit the 'Grand Nord Grand Sud' exhibition (May 11, 2010 until November 28, 2010), where a collection of works by Inuit and Australian Aboriginal artists is on show.
