Tucked away in the heart of the small medieval town of Dol-de-Bretagne is the Cathédraloscope, a museum unlike any other. Offering a journey back to the age of cathedrals, it pays tribute to the work of those builders who, over the years, succeeded one another on these extraordinary building sites.
The aim of Cathédraloscope is to unravel some of the mysteries of cathedrals. Accompanied by an expert in medieval architecture, or with the help of an audio guide, visitors will discover the construction techniques used and the advances made during the Middle Ages. They will understand why these buildings sprang up all over Europe. They will learn how to interpret the stained-glass windows. Armed with a logbook, children will set off in the footsteps of the master builders. Cathédraloscope offers a fun, educational and interactive insight into Gothic art. The tour concludes with a real-life experience: admiring Dol Cathedral from the museum’s viewing point. From April to the end of August, demonstrations and introductory sessions on stone-carving will be led by a master stonemason. Duration: 1 hour. No extra charge.
