A military stronghold for 300 years, Fort Montbarey is the site of the Memorial Gallery of the People of Finistère, a museum that pays tribute to Brittany's victims of World War II.

Built on the orders of Louis XVI to defend the arsenal and occupied by the Nazis in 1940, Fort Montbarey was the scene of bitter fighting during the Liberation. Destroyed and then rebuilt, it now stands as a tribute to the memory of the people of Finistère who fell victim in the 20th Century's bloodiest war. Featuring numerous objects, witness accounts and photographs, the tour records the heavy toll paid by the town. A "death carriage" used for deportation, numerous American vehicles, anti-aircraft batteries and an English Churchill tank are on display in the courtyard. Managed by a team of committed volunteers, always happy to provide full explanations, the Museum holds more than 10,000 records and documents of resistance fighters, soldiers and victims of the Second World War. Handy to know: the tram stops directly opposite.
