These gardens open onto a magnificent lake and drop down, in a succession of terraces, to the river Rance. People love the typically French style garden whose design has remained unchanged since the 18th century (terraces, box hedges, hornbeam, lime-tree avenues), and the ‘romantic garden’ with lawns, copses, rockeries, flower-beds and botanical collections that just become more beautiful from year to year…Built in 1760, Montmarin was originally a “malouinère” (house belonging to ship-owners from St-Malo). During the French Revolution, it became a port and naval yard, employing1200 dockers. Then, from 1840 on, it became a pleasure garden.
