Musée Emmanuel de la Villéon

Landscapes by a travelling Post-Impressionist painter
Museum, Modern/contemporary art in Fougères
  • The post impressionist landscape artist Emmanuel de la Villéon frequently travelled around France, and some of his works, notably his small format panoramas, are exhibited in a listed building in Fougères.

  • Born in Fougères in 1858, Emmanuel de la Villéon loved to paint during visits to his children who all lived in distant areas of France. He even painted several works directly on the bottom of the boxes in which he kept his pots of paint. Even though this support was no bigger than a postcard, he managed to reproduce whole landscapes on them - you can even make out tiny people. Some of the 3,000 works he produced are exhibited in this museum, located in an amazing seventeenth century...

Guided tours take place every afternoon during the summer and workshops for children are also organised regularly.
