Travelling in Brittany with your dog

In Brittany, your dog’s deserved their holiday too. Buckwheat pancake-croquettes, cosy basket and four-legged walks sniffing out the seaspray: here’s everything you need to know for a 100% successful dog-friendly stay!

1. Why choose Brittany for a holiday with your dog?

Brittany’s a dog’s paradise. Wide open spaces, mild climate, walks along the coast nose to the wind… Woof else? A good many municipalities, including the Falaises d’Armor tourist office, even roll out the red carpet: authorised beaches, adapted accommodation, restaurants with “doggy-friendly” terraces. You can rely on the Toutourisme network, which lists the best spots for your dog… and even treats it to a welcome bag of croquettes!

2. Dog-friendly accommodation: where do I sleep?

Nothing could be easier than finding a place that accepts your dog. Cosy gites and family hotels and campsites are just some of the choices that are happy to welcome four-legged travellers. Good advice before booking: check the animal supplement, maximum size allowed and whether there’s a fenced-in garden. And if a food bowl’s provided, it’s even better!

3. Accessible hikes and walks

2,000 km of pure sea-salty pleasure: on the GR®34, your pup can get his paws (and nose) dirty too. Lead strongly recommended, sometimes even mandatory. But Brittany isn’t just coastline: other adventures await you inland. From the legendary forests of Brocéliande to the rocky chaos of Huelgoat and from the Monts d’Arrée wild peaks to the peaceful pathways alongside the Nantes to Brest Canal, landscapes succeed each other, invitations to long walks together. Watch out all the same: some protected areas are forbidden to dogs in order to preserve the fauna.

Tip from an old hand: take water with you, along with a foldable bowl and pet waste bags. Also check the weather forecast: Breton trails are beautiful but can sometimes get slippery when it rains.

4. Beaches where dogs are allowed: what do the regulations say?

There’s no one rule here. Some beaches are forbidden, others are authorised out of season (October-April) and still others are accessible all year round (often with obligatory lead). A wise move? Contact the tourist office or focus on wild coves. Avoid the hottest hours of the day: burning sand isn’t much fun for paws. Your dog likes water? Once they’re in it, they’ll enjoy it just as much!

5. Travelling in Brittany with your dog

Road, railway or water: your pup’s welcome everywhere (or almost). On the  BreizhGo TER network, you can travel on four legs for €7. On the train, the SNCF accepts small dogs free of charge and large ones at half price (muzzle required). As regards boats, rates vary: some are free, others charge between €4 and €60. Whatever the case, here, even dogs have the sea breeze ruffling their hair!
