The main cycling routes in Brittany

To discover Brittany by bike, nine long-distance cycling routes and green routes offer 2,700 km of marked routes for nature lovers. On tow paths, former railway lines or little roads, come and discover the region in the open air and almost without effort! Ride alongside rivers and canals, admire the Gulf of Morbihan, cross the Monts d’Arrée and the Montagnes Noires: there are many ways to escape.

1. La Vélodyssée®, from Roscoff to Nantes

Free-wheel along the Nantes-Brest canal

La Vélodyssée® is the French part of the EuroVelo 1 linking Roscoff to Hendaye. This Breton section consists of a 400-km route which uses part of the Nantes-Brest canal – a must when it comes to touring by bike in Brittany! Green routes, locks decorated with flowers, tow paths: heading south-east, from Pays Léonard to Nantes, the city of Dukes, follow the path of unspoilt nature. Cross through contrasting landscapes and little picturesque villages full of character!

2. Route 2

Saint-Malo to Arzal

200 km across the southern part of bucolic Brittany and its canals

This green route connecting the Channel to the Atlantic Ocean promises a gentle adventure along the Ille-et-Rance canal and the Vilaine river, where you will discover four Towns of Art and History emblematic of Brittany: Saint-Malo, Dinan, Rennes and Redon.

3. Route 3

Saint-Malo to Questembert

Over 200 km in inland Brittany

This route takes the same path as the “Saint Malo – Redon” route from Saint-Malo as far as Evran, situated on the Ille-et-Rance canal. Then, this green route hugs the legendary Brocéliande forest to Ploërmel, former residence of the Dukes of Brittany, as far as Questembert.

4. The Vélomaritime, from Mont Saint-Michel to Roscoff

Cycle along the northern coast of Brittany over 430 km between mythical towns and seaside resorts!

Part of the EuroVelo 4, the Mont Saint-Michel – Roscoff coastal route offers a taste of the sea between Saint-Malo, Dinard, Cap Fréhel, Saint-Brieuc bay, the Pink Granite Coast and the Bay of Morlaix.

5. Route 5

Roscoff to Nantes

More than 400 km at a sporty pace close to the Brittany coastline

Imitating the GR® 34 – Sentier des Douaniers, Brittany is developing a coastal cycling route. The future route will more or less run alongside the shoreline, bays and other jagged coastlines and will guide riders from port to beach, from Roscoff to Nantes. Already some lovely escapades are possible in Pays des Abers, in Audierne Bay, in Pays Bigouden, on the Quiberon Peninsula and around the Gulf of Morbihan. The ideal opportunity to take deep breaths of seaside air!

6. Route 6
Carhaix to Saint-Méen-le-Grand

From west to east over 120 km, this is a lovely way to discover inland Brittany

From the edges of Monts d’Arrée, set off on a bike ride to discover Argoat in inland Brittany. On both sides of Route 6, pretty little villages appear with each pedal. Surrounded with forested mountains, Guerlédan Lake covers an area of 12 km and is ideal for a fun and well-earned break before reaching the birthplace of Louison Bobet.

7. Route 7

Roscoff to Concarneau

From the Channel to the Atlantic, a 150 km green route across Finistère

Route 7 shares its journey with the Vélodyssée® as far as Port-de-Carhaix. Then it goes off on its own across the Montagnes Noires towards Concarneau, a well-known port and seaside resort. On the way, the route passes through Gourin, where the traditional Breton crêpe is celebrated at the end of July. In Guiscriff, take a bucolic break: museum, café, exhibition and natural camp site.

8. Route 8

Saint-Brieuc to Lorient
Nearly 200 km crossing Brittany from north to south

From Saint-Brieuc Bay to Lorient, Route 8 crosses the Brittany countryside on peaceful little roads. It joins the gully of Hilvern bordered with large beech trees and chestnut trees, meandering not far from Saint-Thélo and Le Quillio, villages steeped in the rich industrial past of fine linen canvas. From Pontivy to Lorient, Route 8 then takes the Blavet tow path as it ambles between the wooded hillsides of a green valley.

9. La Régalante
From Mont-Saint-Michel to Nantes

A journey of 275 km at the heart of the Marches de Bretagne and its history.

Between Normandy, Brittany and Loire-Atlantique, the heritage of this vast region awaits you! Winding through the historical area of Marches de Bretagne, la Régalante will cross four towns of Art and History from north to south (Fougères, Vitré, Châteaubriant, Nantes), not forgetting Mont Saint-Michel. On the programme: castles, medieval fortresses, markets, half-timbered houses, and complete reconnection with nature.

Good to know

The route will be connected to three large national and European cycling routes: EV4 – La Vélomaritime® in the north; EV1 – La Vélodyssée® and EV6 – La Véloroute des Fleuves in the south. The Fougères-Vitré section is now open to traffic.
